Current on-going research studies at the Chen Lab:
Meditation for Older Adults with Low Back Pain
We are looking to understand the feasibility and acceptability of a mindfulness-based meditation intervention on pain and symptoms among older adults with chronic low back pain.
The study will require 3 visits to FSU’s Brain Science & Symptom Management Center (BSSMC) at Innovation Park. Where participants will complete some questionnaires, sensory testing, and provide some stool samples.

Meditation for Older Adults with Depression and Low Back Pain
We are looking to understand the feasibility and acceptability of a mindfulness-based meditation intervention on pain and co-ocurring symptoms, like depression, among older adults with chronic low back pain.
The study will require 3 visits to FSU’s BSSMC Center at Innovation Park. You will complete some questionnaires, sensory testing, and provide some stool samples.

Home-based taVNS for Breast Cancer Survivors
This research is being conducted to evaluate if home-based transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a feasible approach to reduce pain and related symptoms in breast cancer survivors.
This study includes 3 visits to our lab at Florida State University, each lasting about 2 hours. Additionally, there are two home-based taVNS sessions daily for 7 days each week, with each session lasting 30 minutes.

Interview with Older Adults with Ongoing Pain and Memory Changes
We are conducting a study to better understand the experiences of older adults who have chronic pain, and concerns about memory or thinking.
In this study you will take part in a confidential 45–60 minute interview where you will share your experiences living with pain and changes in memory. Interviews can happen by phone or online (Zoom).

Cortical and Autonomic Mechanisms of taVNS in Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effects of gentle ear-stimulation therapy (transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation, taVNS) on reducing low back pain. This study includes one in-person visit at our lab where you will receive the taVNS intervention, answer questionnaires, and do some sensory testing.
